Tookey Creek Starbright (P)
This week we saw the passing of one of the most influential Tookey Creek foundation cows. Tookey Creek Starbright (ET) (P) affectionately known as "Star" was the first home bred Tookey Creek cow here at "Wilga". She was the result of an Embryo Transfer program with Kensit Kelly, and was out of a Kelly Wallah cow by Yarrawonga Tomana. Star was born on the 30th of December 1988 and passed away just shy of her 24th birthday.
Star was the first show cow for Tookey Creek and was exhibited at many local shows and also at the Sydney Royal Easter show. Two of her most memorable successes were at Wee Waa show winning the Grand Champion Interbreed exhibit as a heifer and also winning a much prized 4th place in a large class at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1990.
Star was an exceptionally sound animal in both structure and temperament and she passed these qualities on to all 18 of her progeny. Star was used in an ET program which resulted in 7 ET calves and she also successfully raised 11 natural calves herself. 9 of her progeny went on to classify and our herd is now infused with her genetics. Star is also the mother of Tookey Creek Platinum (P) who sold in 2004 to Dangarfield Cattle Company for $28,000.
When Star was preg tested empty in 2004 at 15 years of age the decision was made to let her live out her golden years in the house paddock. An animal like Star only comes along once in a lifetime and she will be sorely missed. Star cemented our love for the Santa Gertrudis breed and is the embodiment of all the traits we breed for....
